Blue Caprice (2013)
The true crime genre has exploded in recent years. There are entire cable channels devoted to the subject, with Investigation Discovery leading the pack by curating fearlessly ridiculous programming and shows including Southern Fried Homicide, Blood Lies & Alibis, Frenemies, Happily Never After, Swamp Murders, Wives with Knives (!!!), Pretty Bad Girls, Very Bad Men, and six titles with the word Dead in them. Grim, horrific, and most importantly true stories of murder are reduced to sepia toned pulpy reenactments with ghoulish narrators giving us a pun filled Cliffs Notes of all of the gory details. This style is now a go to, with very few attempting for more. It’s cheap, and easy, which is precisely why Blue Caprice is such a refreshing take on the ‘based on true events’ trope.
